Anguier, Michel

Anguier, Michel
(1612-1686)
   sculptor
Born in Eu, Michel Anguier was the brother of the sculptor François anguier and, like him, studied with the noted sculptor simon guillain. He then spent 10 years in Rome, where he studied in particular with D'Algardi. Michel Anguier was commissioned by Nicolas fouquet to work at Saint-Mandé and at vaux, and later adorned the stuccos in the louvre for anne of Austria (1654-55). He also did most of the decorated sculpture in the Val-de-Grace (group of La Nativité, 1662-67). He then executed the reliefs for the portal of Saint-Denis (1671-77) after a design by lebrun. Michel Anguier worked in marble, ivory, bronze, and silver, producing numerous groupings and religious statues that bear the mark of italian baroque models.
